Lab-Grown Diamonds Explained (2026 Guide)

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. They share the same chemical formula (pure carbon, sp3-bonded), the same crystal structure (face-centered cubic), and the same physical properties: hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, refractive index of 2.42, and thermal conductivity of 900–2,320 W/mK. The only difference is origin: earth-mined diamonds form over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure deep in the mantle; lab diamonds are grown in weeks using two methods.

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber and exposed to a carbon-rich gas mixture (typically methane and hydrogen). Microwave energy breaks the gas molecules, depositing carbon atoms layer by layer on the seed crystal at ~800–1,000°C. CVD produces high-quality, large diamonds with fewer inclusions. Most colorless lab diamonds on IZIOS are CVD-grown.

HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature)

A carbon source (graphite or diamond powder) is subjected to pressures of 5–6 GPa and temperatures of 1,300–1,600°C using a cubic or belt press. This replicates the natural conditions that form diamonds in the earth’s mantle. HPHT is widely used to grow yellow and fancy-color lab diamonds, and also to improve the color of CVD diamonds post-growth.

Certification

Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same independent laboratories as mined diamonds — IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Grading reports include the same 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, plus measurements, fluorescence, and growth method disclosure. IZIOS lists the certificate number for every diamond so buyers can verify independently.

Price Comparison

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60–80% less than mined equivalents of the same grade. A 1-carat G/VS1 round mined diamond averages $4,500–$6,000 on the retail market in 2026. A comparable lab diamond on IZIOS is $600–$1,200. The savings scale with carat weight — a 3-carat lab diamond that would cost $40,000+ mined can often be found under $4,000 lab-grown.
